Encinitas Dental Care Sleep Apnea

The word apnea comes from the greek (apnoia) and literally means “without breath”. This is exactly what is sleep apnea – when your breathing stops while sleeping. This is what differs from the simple snoring.
When sleep apnea a person suffers, snoring is usually a symptom, but the real concern arises when the sleeper stops snoring and breathing stops. The body reacts, the sleeper wakes – but often are not aware of waking – and breathing begins again with a gasp. This pattern of snoring, stop breathing, waking and gasping happens over and over again during the night, leaving patients without oxygen and at the offices of the Legislative tired.
Here Craig Fitch, DDS, we usually see people with obstructive sleep apnea, the most common form of apnea seen today. Obstructive sleep apnea occurs when the muscles around the tongue and soft palate relax and become loose, blocking the airway.
A 1981 graduate of the Indiana University Dental School, Dr. Craig Fitch was first awarded a hospital-based general practice residency and then joined the Navy Dental Corp, serving the Marines at Camp Pendleton. After completing his Naval duty in 1987, Dr. Fitch opened his own practice in Encinitas, where he has been providing exceptional care ever since.
Always wanting to remain on the leading edge of his profession, Dr. Fitch has pursued countless hours of post-graduate education at some of the finest institutions in the country. He has completed a mini residency in aesthetic dentistry at UCLA and is a graduate of the prestigious Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies, a world-renowned center for the study of both neuromuscular and aesthetic dentistry. Dr. Fitch attained fellowship status in the Academy of General Dentistry in 1993.
Originally from Indiana, Dr. Fitch now very much enjoys living in Carlsbad with his wife and their five sons.
